Value-based care is centered on boosting patient safety and driving overall efficiency while simultaneously pushing for operational advancement without sacrificing quality of care. One major focus of the transition to value-based care is addressing and preventing adverse events that can impact patient safety, clinical outcomes, reimbursements and, thus, the bottom line.
With limited resources, hospitals strive to improve patient safety without sacrificing overall productivity. To achieve this, hospitals must prevent errors and inefficiencies, such as missed care, or error of omission, that come in the form of an unmet patient need.
When missed care occurs, the impact is felt in many different forms:[i] Hospital-acquired infections or complications, for example, may present as pneumonia, general weakness, increased potential for falls, skin breakdown or poor nutritional status. All of these symptoms or side effects negatively affect the healing process and patient outcomes.
Hospitals and health systems can strategically address the issue of missed care and help prevent infection, which is a significant focus of the Joint Commission’s 2020 Hospital National Patient Safety Goals, with the right technology solution and communication. Advanced nurse call systems can help, for example, monitor care by generating alerts to keep providers on schedule with delivery of patient services. These automated reminders help ensure care is provided to patients at the appropriate time to reduced prolonged lapses that may result in infection, such as blood infection from central lines or urinary tract infection caused by catheters.
