A Legacy of Innovation: The Rauland Story

From radio pioneers to leaders in critical communication systems, Rauland has evolved innovative advancements in healthcare and education technology.

1929

Rauland Company Founded

E. Norman Rauland, an inventor and radio enthusiast, founded the Rauland Company after launching Chicago-based radio station WENR in 1924. During the Great Depression, the company produced power amplifiers and PA systems, later securing military contracts to develop radio and communication systems for WWII.

1940s & 1950s

Expanding Communication Technology

In the 1940s, Rauland expanded its influence through key acquisitions, becoming a leader in school communications with Webster-Chicago (1941) and a major supplier of WWII radar and communications technology after acquiring Baird Television (1942). In 1948, Zenith Radio purchased Rauland’s CRT division, while Norm Rauland and George Borg launched Rauland-Borg to focus on sound and communications, including military contracts for ship-to-shore radios, radar jamming, and intercom systems.

1960s-1990s

Breakthroughs in Education and Healthcare

In the 1960s, Rauland-Borg led the shift to transistorized sound and communication systems, launching Telecenter® in 1968—the first commercial touch-tone technology for school communications. In 1979, the Responder® acquisition cemented its leadership in nurse call systems. Expansion continued with the Biamp® acquisition in 1989, followed by growth into Latin America and the Pacific Rim in the 1990s.

Acquisition by AMETEK, Inc.

In 2017, Rauland was acquired by AMETEK Inc., a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices with manufacturing, sales and service locations across the United States and other countries throughout the world.
